Optical Turbulence in the Ocean (invited)
نویسنده
چکیده
The established view of diver visibility has been mainly focused on the effects of particles or turbidity of the water. The influence of optical turbulence due to variations of ocean temperature and salinity is shown to contribute to the degradation, through model and field validation. Lab setup of a simulated environment and future directions are also discussed. OCIS codes: (010.7295) Visibility and imaging; (010.4450) Ocean optics; (010.7060) Turbulence

Radiative transfer in ocean turbulence and its effect on underwater light field
[1] Turbulence in the upper ocean generates fluctuations in temperature and salinity, which result in variations in inherent optical properties (IOPs) and further change the underwater light field. A simulation-based study is performed for the radiative transfer (RT) of natural light in the turbulent flows in the upper ocean. For a canonical problem of turbulent shear flow interacting with the ...
متن کاملAn Optical Turbulence Sensor
To develop an accurate, compact and sensitive optical sensor capable of performing non-invasive instantaneous measurements of the rate of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy TKE (E [m2/s3]). Turbulence dissipation rates provide vital information to determine mixing processes in the water column. In addition, enables the scaling information needed to link large mixing events with smallscale ...
متن کاملOptical satellite imagery detection of internal wave effects from a submerged turbulent outfall in the stratified ocean
[1] Sea surface brightness anomalies caused by a municipal wastewater discharge are detected from space in areas much larger than their submerged turbulence source. The mechanism involves a complex interaction between currents, topography, tides, vertical and horizontal mixing, internal waves and stratified turbulence. Citation: Keeler, R. N., V. G. متن کاملPartially coherent beam propagation in atmospheric turbulence [invited].
Partially coherent beams hold much promise in free-space optical communications for their resistance to the deleterious effects of atmospheric turbulence. We describe the basic theoretical and computational tools used to investigate these effects, and review the research to date.
متن کاملQuantifying Turbulence Microstructure for Improvement of Underwater Imaging
Enhancing visibility through scattering media is important in many fields for gaining information from the scattering medium. In the ocean, in particular, enhancement of imaging and visibility is important for divers, navigation, robotics, and target and mine detection and classification. Light scattering from particulates and turbulence in the ocean strongly affects underwater visibility. The ...
